Do you remember the way you felt
This time last year
All the words we left unsaid
I was in love with you
My heart grew cold from waiting
My eyes began to wander
Over faces and bodies
Within my reach
These hands long to hold
These lips long to kiss
I left my heart in memories of last year
My body keeps marching on.
Sometimes when I think of you
Even though I’m all alone
In my room
I’ll dive under my blankets
So the walls can’t judge me
For the silly smile
On my face.
I ought to give fair warning
Before there is no turning back
You’ve reached the edge of the map
Here there be monsters.
The greatest parts of me lie uncharted
Hiding depths that teem
With darkness and creatures unseen.
There’s no room in this bed
For anyone beside me
There used to be space
But I filled it up
Rather easily
With well-worn books
Camera apparatuses
And vintage magazines
But if you ask very nicely
I’ll find a way
To make you fit.
At the end
Of a cold and
Weary day
I don’t want
To find comfort
And warmth
By fireside
In a cozy sweater
While drinking
Hot tea
I’d rather find
Everything I need
In your arms.
You might prefer
Crisp autumn
With a thick scarf
About your neck
Hands thrust deep
Into coat pockets
As brisk wind whips
Down city streets
Stirring colorful leaves
But there is springtime
In your smile.
